The very first TEDxWomen event in Brussels will take place this Friday October 28, with some of Europe’s great thinkers and doers in attendance. Powered by Safe Motherhood Week, this latest event follows on from a successful Safe Motherhood Week 2016 campaign which ran in September.
At TEDxBrusselsWomen, inspiring women from different backgrounds such as technology, entrepreneurship, health, and science will share their stories on stage.
The event will also connect live with TEDWomen in San Francisco, which will feature the webcast of some of the most influential women in the world.
A noted Safe Motherhood Week luminary, Dr Lode Dewulf is among the panel of innovative thinkers and doers that have been invited to participate in Brussels.
Lode Dewulf is a physician with a passion for patient perspectives and understanding. When he studied and practiced medicine in Belgium and South Africa, he quickly realized that good education about health and disease was at least as important as good medicines to help patients achieve the best outcomes. To have a broader impact he then joined the pharmaceutical industry in 1989, and worked to provide good education around certain diseases and new treatment options. Ten years later, when the internet opened new possibilities to provide quality medical information, he took a one-year sabbatical leave to co-found PlanetMedica, the first Healthcare internet portal in Europe. He now has almost 25 years of pharmaceutical medical experience around the world and currently works as Chief Patient Affairs Officer at UCB, Belgium.
He will deliver a presentation on the concept of the “normal” pregnancy, where he will seek to redefine this outdated concept. Dewulf will challenge many of the perceptions surrounding this, explaining why a normal pregnancy is not so normal and why “outdated motherhood morals” must be altered to the actual motherhood statistics.
The theme of this year’s Safe Motherhood Week campaign was “Motherhood shapes our future, we all have the power to make it safe”. This will be echoed at TEDxWomenBrussels, where Dewulf will also introduce the idea of a Motherhood Moonshot, to which each and every one of us can contribute. According to Dewulf, the digital and social media revolution allows us to share much more data than ever before on what pregnancy means to all of us.
This latest event follows two successful workshops also powered by Safe Motherhood Week in September, which sought to discuss the challenges facing mothers and parents today with leaders and thinkers across all sectors.
An event held at Microsoft in Brussels during Safe Motherhood Week looked at disrupting the status quo and the shift towards a whole system approach to safe motherhood and maternal health, while another high-powered workshop sought to determine measurement for maternal healthcare during the European Health Forum Gastein 2016. TEDxWomenBrussels will continue this great work.
Safe Motherhood Week is delighted to attend the first ever TEDxWomen event in Brussels. It will take place at Sheraton Brussels, Place Charles Rogier 3 from 15.00 to 19.00pm. Go to http://www.tedxbrussels.eu/tedxbrusselswomen2016/ to see the agenda.
